Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Endoscopic sinus surgery is a procedure used to remove blockages in the sinuses (the spaces filled with air in some of the bones of the facial skull) through the nose. These blockages cause sinusitis, a condition in which the sinuses swell and become clogged, causing pain and impaired breathing.

Endoscopic sinus surgery offers functionality, a way to clear blockage while disturbing as little healthy tissue as possible. Because it is less invasive than other, open or radical surgical methods, it increases the chance of rapid recovery. The doctor may also recommend endoscopic surgery to remove polyps or to straighten the septum.

The surgery

The surgery usually lasts from one to two hours, and it can be done in both local, or under general anaesthesia.

During the surgery an endoscope is inserted into the nose, and the doctor looks inside through  the eyepiece of it. The endoscope allows the doctor to see what causes the blockages in the sinuses. The doctor can also use different surgical instruments along with the endoscope to remove  the disease. After the procedure, the nose  is not completely packed to allow natural nasal breathing.

After surgery

Pain is usually mild after surgery. Medical therapy should be continued after the surgery. Patients may use salt-water sprays or antibiotic lubricants to help normal sinus activity.

Swimming and strenuous activities should be avoided for 10-14 days after surgery because they might cause bleeding. A bloody nasal discharge is normal for 3-6 days following surgery.

Complications and risks

The risks from endoscopic sinus surgery are: allergic reactions to anaesthesia, bleeding, infection,  or very rarely injury of the orbit (the bony cavity of the eye) or the brain skull.

As voice resonance is developed partially within the sinuses, the alternating the structures of the sinuses may affect resonance. Double vision may also occur.

You can avoid most complications by choosing the right surgeon and following pre- and postoperative instructions.
